How to Fix a CMOS Checksum Error

While fixing a CMOS checksum error is not always possible, especially with hardware damage, the solution is usually straightforward. Follow these steps in order to resolve the error.

– Restart the computer. A normal restart usually creates a new checksum and eliminates the error. If the error persists after a normal restart, further action is needed.

– Download and flash a BIOS update. Download the update from the motherboard manufacturer’s website. Many motherboards can download an update from within the BIOS while connected to your network using an Ethernet cable.

– Reset the BIOS. Some motherboards have a switch either on the board or the back of the computer to reset the BIOS settings. If such a switch isn’t available, remove the CMOS battery from the system for a minute or two. This power loss causes everything in the CMOS to reset.

– Replace the CMOS battery. If the problem is a dead battery, replace it with a new one. The CMOS battery is located on the motherboard. On desktops, it’s easy to access and is held in place by a metal clip. On laptops, you’ll need to open the machine to access the motherboard, which might be best left to a professional.

– Consult a technician or computer repair expert. If all else fails, the problem may be due to hardware damage. Before purchasing a new motherboard or recycling the machine, have a professional inspect it.
