How to Take a Screenshot Using Built-in Tools

Take a screenshot for Windows

1. Print Screen (Prt Sc) Key

  • Description: Capture the entire screen.
  • How to use: Press the Print Screen key (sometimes labeled Prnt Scrn) on the top row of your keyboard. The screenshot is copied to the clipboard and can be pasted into any graphics application.

2. Windows Key + G or Windows Key + Alt + G

  • Description: Capture the currently active screen.
  • How to use: Use these keyboard shortcuts to access Game Mode for recording or capturing the screen. Note that it cannot record videos on the Desktop screen.

3. Snip & Sketch Tool or Windows Key + Shift + S

  • Description:
    • Rectangular Snip: Drag to create a rectangular shape.
    • Freeform Snip: Draw a freeform shape.
    • Full-Screen Snip: Capture the entire screen.
  • How to use: Type ‘Snip & Sketch’ in the taskbar search box and select it from the results. It allows you to capture and annotate screenshots, saved as PNG, GIF, or JPEG.

4. Google Chrome

  • Description: Capture entire web pages using an extension.
  • How to use: Install the ‘GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture’ extension. Click the extension icon in the top-right corner to capture and save the webpage as an image or PDF.

5. Snipping Tool

  • Description:
    • Free-form Snip: Draw a free-form shape.
    • Rectangular Snip: Drag to create a rectangular shape.
    • Window Snip: Capture a specific window.Full-Screen Snip: Capture the entire screen.
  • How to use: Type ‘snipping tool’ in the taskbar search box and select it. It lets you capture various screen areas and perform basic editing.

6. Microsoft Edge on Windows 10

  • Description: Capture screenshots of web pages.
  • How to use: Open Edge, click the settings and more (…) button, select Web capture, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. It captures the entire page or a selected area with automatic scrolling.

 

Take a screenshot for macOS

1. Capture a screenshot on macOS and save it as a .png file:

  • Press Shift + Command + 3 to capture the full screen.
  • Press Shift + Command + 4 to select and capture a portion of the screen.
  • Press Shift + Command + 4 + Space Bar, then click on a window to capture a specific window.
  • Press Shift + Command + 6 to capture the Touch Bar (available on macOS Sierra 10.12.2 or later).

2. Capture a screenshot on macOS to the Clipboard:

  • Press Control + Shift + Command + 3 to capture the entire screen to the clipboard.
  • Press Control + Shift + Command + 4 to select and capture a portion of the screen to the clipboard.
  • Press Control + Shift + Command + 4 + Space Bar, then click on a window to capture a specific window to the clipboard.
  • Press Control + Shift + Command + 6 to capture the Touch Bar to the clipboard (available on macOS Sierra 10.12.2 or later).
