How to Create and Use Disk Partitions on Windows and macOS

Windows creating a Disk Partition:

1. Open Disk Management:

  • Right-click the Start button and select Disk Management
  • Or press Win + X and choose Disk Management

2. Select the Disk:

  • Right-click the disk you want to partition (ensure there is unallocated space or free space) and select New Simple Volume

3. Follow the New Simple Volume Wizard:

  • Click Next
  • Specify the size of the partition (in MB) in the Specify Volume Size step and click Next
  • Assign a drive letter or let Windows assign one automatically, then click Next
  • Choose Format this volume with the following settings and configure options such as File System (NTFS, FAT32) and Allocation Unit Size, then click Next
  • Review your settings and click Finish to create the partition

4. Verify the New Partition:

  • After creating the partition, it should appear in This PC or File Explorer

 

macOS creating a Disk Partition:

1. Open Disk Utility:

  • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility

2. Select the Disk:

  • Select the disk you want to partition from the sidebar

3. Click “Partition”:

  • Click the Partition button at the top

4. Create a New Partition:

  • Click the + button to add a new partition
  • Specify the size and name (Label) for the partition
  • Choose the file system type (such as APFS or Mac OS Extended)

5. Click Apply:

  • Review your settings and click Apply to create the partition

6. Wait for the Operation to Complete:

  • Disk Utility will create the new partition for you
