How to Fix ‘No Battery Is Detected’ on Laptop

Your laptop’s battery is essential for portability, but if you see a “no battery detected” error, don’t panic. It doesn’t always mean the battery or laptop needs replacing—there are several fixes you can try first.

  1. Plug in your laptop. The battery might have simply run out of power, so before panicking, connect it to a power source. Wait at least 15 minutes, then try turning it on.
  2. Restart your laptop. This should be one of the first steps when facing almost any laptop issue, as restarting can resolve many problems, including the battery not detected error.
  3. Cool down your laptop. If left in the sun or used all day, especially in a hot room on a poor surface, the battery might overheat. Let it cool down, and then use it on a hard surface to improve airflow.
  4. Update Windows. No matter your Windows version, keeping the operating system updated is crucial for maintaining both the OS and hardware. Between basic driver installations and bug fixes, installing available Windows updates could resolve the battery not detected error.
  5. Run a built-in troubleshooter to have Windows attempt to fix the problem. In Windows 10, access this through Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Power > Run the troubleshooter. For Windows 11, find troubleshooters in Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  1. Check the battery’s device status in Device Manager. This step is more about verifying if Windows detects a problem. To check, expand the Batteries category, right-click your laptop’s battery (e.g., Microsoft AC Adapter) and select Properties. If you see a message stating your device is working properly, the issue likely lies elsewhere. If not, the battery might be damaged, especially if it’s an older laptop—laptop batteries don’t last forever.
  2. Update the battery’s device drivers to clear the error message. You can do this in Device Manager. Right-click your laptop’s battery name in the Batteries section and select Update driver. Alternatively, use a driver updater tool.
  3. If your laptop doesn’t detect the battery, perform a full shutdown, unplug the power cable, and remove the battery physically. Reinsert the battery, reconnect the charging cable, and power on your laptop.
  4. Uninstall the battery from Device Manager and let Windows reinstall it automatically. In Device Manager, find the battery, right-click it, and choose Uninstall device. Then reboot your computer to have Windows reinstall it.
  5. Reset BIOS and then start up your laptop as usual. If the battery issue is caused by faulty BIOS settings, returning them to their defaults should fix it.
